NEW DELHI: Three months after a tragic stampede in Karur that claimed the lives of 41 individuals, including nine children, actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning on January 12. The inquiry mainly revolved around his decision to leave the venue when crowds were surging and whether he was aware of the growing chaos during his absence.
Vijay, who was expected to arrive at 12:45 PM, reached the venue only after a six-hour delay at about 7 PM, by which time the number of spectators had swelled dramatically. CBI officials sought clarity on the sequence of events leading to the stampede, asking Vijay whether he was informed about the expected footfall and the initial congestion levels at the event. They also questioned him regarding allegations that police had used force to manage crowds and if there were any prior announcements made about a missing child during his speech.
In addition to Vijay, DGP Armed Police Davidson Devasirvatham has also been summoned for questioning, alongside other key figures within the TVK, including general secretary Aadhav Arjuna and joint general secretary Nirmal Kumar. The central agency's involvement follows a Supreme Court ruling on October 13, transferring the investigation from local authorities.
The stampede occurred as thousands gathered in Velusamypuram to support Vijay's campaign effort. As chaos erupted when he finally arrived, the consequences were devastating. Public outrage has been mounting, demanding accountability from all involved. Vijay's abrupt departure to Chennai following the incident, while neglecting to address press queries at both airports, has only intensified scrutiny around his leadership during that fateful event.
The CBI's investigation represents a crucial step in addressing numerous unanswered questions and ensuring that such a tragedy does not recur in the future.
