NEW DELHI: Bangladesh is taking steps toward the restoration of visa facilities for Indian nationals, following a significant electoral victory by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Diplomatic sources confirmed the move to The Hindu; however, a formal notification has yet to be issued, leaving both nations and potential travelers in a state of anticipation.
The suspension of visa issuance occurred in December 2025 when Indian missions in Bangladesh faced protests and incidents of stone-pelting, leading to heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries. In retaliation, protests erupted in India targeting Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi and various visa centers in West Bengal. Due to these escalating situations, the Bangladesh High Commission temporarily halted indexing visa applications.
Visa services had previously been disrupted amidst the political upheaval which saw the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government in July-August 2024. Reports suggest that before this disruption, Indian visa centers in Bangladesh issued more than 8,000 daily visas. Following the turmoil, visa application centers operated sporadically, hampered by security threats, with only about 3,000 medical and student visas being processed recently.
The renewed discussions surrounding visa facilities coincide with statements from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, which expressed its intention to enhance bilateral relations. Randhir Jaiswal, the Ministry's official spokesman, remarked in a recent briefing, “Building on the warm and historic ties between the two countries, India looks forward to further strengthening our multifaceted bilateral ties with Bangladesh.”
The potential normalizing of visa procedures signifies a noteworthy development in India-Bangladesh relations, reflecting the changing political landscape and aspirations for cooperation. For citizens of both nations, this restoration promises not only the revival of travel opportunities but also a positive path toward renewed diplomatic engagement.
