India’s Restaurant Industry Faces LPG Crisis Amid West Asia Conflict

KOLKATA: The Indian restaurant industry is facing a significant LPG shortage due to conflict in West Asia. The National Restaurants Association of India is calling for government intervention to prevent operational shutdowns. Many restaurants are adapting by exploring alternatives like induction cookers.

KOLKATA: As the conflict in West Asia disrupts energy supplies, Kolkata's vibrant restaurant industry is facing an urgent shortage of commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This crisis is not isolated to Kolkata; it reverberates through other major metropolitan areas, including Bengaluru and Chennai, causing widespread concern among restaurant owners who fear operational shutdowns if fuel supply chains aren’t swiftly restored.

The National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI), along with hospitality industry leaders, has called for immediate government action to address this crisis. The NRAI has urged Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri for assistance, citing that prolonged disruptions in LPG supply could profoundly affect the industry's viability, impacting both business employers and their workforce. “If the situation doesn’t improve, many establishments may face the grim reality of shutting their doors,” stated an NRAI representative.

In response to these challenges, many restaurants are exploring alternative cooking methods. One notable approach is the increased use of induction cookers as a stopgap measure to counteract the inconsistencies in gas supplies. Debaditya Chaudhury, Managing Director of the popular Chowman restaurant chain, highlighted the importance of adaptability in these trying times. Drawing parallels to the resilience displayed during the COVID-19 pandemic, he remarked, “We must pivot quickly and efficiently to ensure our operations can continue without major disruptions.”

As the situation develops, the restaurant industry remains hopeful that government intervention will provide the necessary support to navigate this crisis, ensuring its survival and resilience in the face of adversity.
