AIADMK Factional Dispute Erupts Over Leadership in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: A faction of over 30 AIADMK MLAs is divided over leadership support, creating tensions within the party following recent elections. While one group backs Edappadi K. Palaniswami, another, led by S.P. Velumani, claims majority support. The situation has escalated with both factions presenting their credentials to the Pro-tem Speaker, signaling a potential leadership battle.

CHENNAI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is facing a significant internal conflict following its disappointing performance in the recent Tamil Nadu elections. A split has emerged among the newly elected legislators over who should lead the party in the assembly. Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the party's general secretary, has garnered the support of 17 MLAs according to his camp, while a rival faction claims backing from 30 MLAs for former Minister S.P. Velumani.

On May 11, after a swearing-in ceremony for legislators, a letter was submitted to the Pro-tem Speaker M.V. Karuppaiah, purportedly designating Palaniswami as the Leader of the Legislature Party. However, this claim was quickly challenged when Velumani, accompanied by C.Ve. Shanmugam and other prominent party members, presented a counterletter to Karuppaiah, showcasing their own support. This marked a notable shift in control dynamics within the AIADMK.

Palaniswami, sensing the unrest, attempted to downplay the situation, denying any indications that the party was on the verge of division. Yet, contrasting receptions from their colleagues in the assembly suggest a different reality. Attendance during the recent assembly session saw Palaniswami escorted only by a scant few allies, while Velumani arrived to a more enthusiastic welcome.

In the backdrop of this turmoil, the ambiance at Shanmugam's residence has been lively, with numerous party members gathering to strategize on their next steps. Historical context indicates that such fractures are not uncommon within the AIADMK; two years prior, the party faced a similar dilemma after underwhelming results in the Lok Sabha elections, prompting calls for reconciliation among party factions including discussions with former leader V.K. Sasikala.

As the drama unfolds, it remains to be seen how the AIADMK will navigate this challenging period and whether the rift can be healed before the upcoming political challenges ahead.
